Spontaneous ...Playful...Fantastic" The Whimsical Side of Art!

"Waste Nots"
Presenting Artist: Meredith Hale

Training Date: Tuesday October 1, 2013 7-9pm

One man's trash is another man's treasure! Inspired by the work of Pacific NW artist Marita Dingus students will make personal whimsical sculptures with wire and cloth and then decorate them with recycled and found objects. Old CD's, ribbon, shells….time to clean out the junk drawer!

    "Whimsical Characters"
    Presenting Artist: Alexis St. John

    Training Date: Tues. January 7, 2014 7-9pm

    Children will have the opportunity to learn about the creative process that goes into developing a character including physical appearance as well as personality traits. They will learn pencil drawing and color pencil techniques.

  • Using their imagination to develop a character on paper Pencil drawing techniques

    "Hangin' With Calder"
    Presenting Artist: Kit Kuhn

    Training Date: March 4, 2014 7-9pm

    Students will create copper wire pendants based on the creative inspiration of artist Alexander Calder. Students will learn simple metal-working techniques and get a chance to use the tools professional jewelers use.

  • Properties of metal as an art medium    
  • Jewelry as wearable art designed by local jeweler Kit Kuhn

    "The Whimsical Forms of the Sea"
    Presenting Artist: Diane Sahlin

    Training Date: Tuesday April 29, 2014 7-9pm


    Children will learn about Pacific NW glass artist Dale Chihuly and his Seaforms Series. They will apply color to heat-sensitive sheeting to create their own "Whimsical Forms of the Sea". Docents will then "form" the sheeting into desired shapes using heat to represent the art of glass blowing. The concept of color to create a "whimsical feel" will be explored.

  • Work with shrink sheeting and heat to create irregular forms resembling sea forms
