Students will be introduced to the artistic design and creation of storybook illustrations by local children's author and artist Sarah Turner. They will learn to draw their own "Whimsical character" using geometric and organic shapes while expanding their imagination to develop a character on paper.

"The Wonderful Towers of Watts"

The historical Watts Towers or "Nuestro Pueblo" of Los Angeles, CA is the inspiration for our "Wonderful Towers of Watts" project. Students will create their own majestic tower out of wire and clay based on the work of Italian-American artist Simon Rodia.

"Underground Railroad Quilts"

In celebration of Black History Month students will learn about the Underground Railroad and discover how one family's map to freedom was woven into the art of a quilt. Local artist Gayle Beard has created an amazing gallery of paintings representing these quilts and will lead students in creating their own story through pictures and "quilt squares" made out of cardstock and colored pencils.

"Monochromatic Magic"

Students will learn about "monochromatic" painting, the art of using only one color or "hue", to complete their own monochromatic landscape masterpiece.
